Home Remedies for Arthritis

Approximately 43 million Americans suffer with the pain of some form of arthritis. Merriam-Webster defines arthritis as: “a disease that causes the joints of the body to become swollen and painful.” Symptoms may vary depending on the type of arthritis; pain and stiffness of joints is common; swelling, redness and a decreased range of motion are also possible. An article I read online claims that there are more than 100 different types of arthritis with the two most often seen being:
  1. Osteoarthritis  (most common), a condition often seen as people age or have a joint  injury, and
  2. Rheumatoid arthritis that occurs when your body’s immune system goes amiss and misreads signals, then attacks the body.
Gout, another form of a potentially crippling type of arthritis occurs when there is too much uric acid in the system; it is an extremely painful form of arthritis commonly occurring in the big toe first. Gout can initiate stiff joints, pain, heat, swelling and redness of the affected part. As well as the large toe, it can affect your ankles, insteps, heels, wrists, fingers and elbows. These attacks can occur from having alcohol, drugs, an illness or sometimes stress. The first few attacks can improve within 3-10 days, possibly without treatment and you may not have any more attacks for possibly even years. Psoriatic arthritis is a joint problem that often occurs with a skin condition called psoriasis. Lupus is an extremely cruel form of arthritis with inflammation, swelling, and damage to joints, lungs, blood, skin, heart and kidneys

Arthritis Pain relief During Cold Weather

If you have any form of arthritis, dress warmly when the weather is cold—hat, gloves leg warmers, warm pants—whatever it takes to maintain a comfortable body temperature.

  • Exercise indoors
  • Swim in a heated pool
  • Take warm baths
  • Use Vitamin D as a supplement
  • Wear solid, supportive shoes if you live where it freezes
  • Try a glucosamine-chondroitin supplement (if you are allergic to shellfish, be cautious as many of these supplements are made from shellfish. Glucosamine by itself is safer if you have these allergies.)
  • Add Omega-3 fatty acids found in fish oil
  • Have a massage
  • Take NSAIDs (Non-Steroidal Anti-Inflammatory Drugs) such as aspirin, Ibuprofen, Naproxen, etc.
  • Try acupuncture for pain

Home Remedies to Help Ease the Pain of Arthritis:

While there are currently no known cures for arthritis, there are some simple things you can do to ease the pain of many types of arthritis:

  • Cayenne Pepper has been found to have pain-relieving properties when eaten or used in a lotion or ointment and applied to sore muscles or joints. If you mix it into a lotion or ointment and apply it to a painful area of your body, be sure to use it sparingly. There are commercial products with Capsaicin (the pain-relieving ingredient in Cayenne Pepper) in them that I have tried, and when I put the cream on too thickly it burned my skin. Try it, but be cautious. Cayenne pepper can also be beneficial in treating high blood pressure and a cough.
  • Raw, unprocessed Apple Cider Vinegar (ACV) can add essential nutrients to your diet such as magnesium, potassium, phosphorus, and calcium. These nutrients can help relieve joint pain. The potassium in the ACV helps prevent calcium from building up in the joints; a condition associated with arthritis. Take 1 TBSP of ACV mixed in 8 Oz of water and sweetened  with honey (if desired) before meals to aid digestion and relieve arthritis pain. It may also be used topically. Mix 2 TBSP of ACV with 1 TBSP of Coconut Oil or Olive Oil for a soothing joint rub.
  • Curcumin, found in turmeric, and resveratrol, found in grapes, wine, berries, peanuts, and chocolate are nutritional supplements that seem to benefit people with osteoarthritis of the knee. They have been used in traditional Hindu medicine for at least a thousand years for various health problems, including joint disorders and arthritis.
  • Omega-3 fatty acids also appear to be beneficial for cardio-protective effectiveness.
  • Leeks, scallions, shallots, garlic, onions and other members of the allium family help to prevent joint pain
  • Dr. F. Batmanghelidjf, in his book, “You’re Not Sick, You’re Thirsty!”, says that dehydration is a major trigger for rheumatoid arthritis—drink LOTS of water!
  • Women who eat a lot of vegetables from the cabbage family (cruciferous vegetables) have a lower risk for early arthritis.
  • Exercise is important, but begin gently at first and keep communication lines open with your doctor concerning the type of exercise and how much to do.
  • Keeping your weight at a desirable limit is important; too much weight stresses the knee joint.
  • A warm shower may ease pain.
  • Keep up on current information regarding your condition. There are various websites that may give you information on arthritis; if you do not have a doctor and don’t know where to start, try contacting the Website: http://www.arthritis.org. The Mayo Clinic distributes a newsletter with tips to help you manage your arthritis symptoms

Home Remedies for a Cough

There are many home remedies for a cough and a lot of them will be in the average spice rack in American kitchens. I have asthma, so not only do I use these remedies for coughs due to colds, but for for a persistent cough, such as asthma, as well. If there is a difference between the two, I will note it below. For all of the tea recipes, I recommend using a strainer because the last thing you need when coughing is to have some piece of an herb stick in the back of your throat and trigger another coughing spell. I've been there, it's not fun, so use a tea strainer, some cheesecloth, or even a clean sock if you're desperate.

People with heart conditions should keep in mind that many herbs have the effect of dilating the bronchial tubes, which can cause jittery sensations and possibly speed up the heart. For that reason please be cautious when using dried plantain, thyme or coltsfoot.

Vick's VapoRub:

Vick's VapoRub
You've probably heard throughout your life that Vick's VapoRub (or a similar herbal concoction) stops coughs when applied to your chest, or used in the dispenser area of a humidifier, but did you know that applying it to the soles of your feet and wearing socks over it can help coughs too? I like this approach because sometimes I really don't want Vick's around my face or on my chest or back, and it's a nice alternative to that. Simply slather the Vick's on the soles of your feet and put on some socks (make sure you don't care if the socks get grease stains) right before going to bed. This treatment is best for a cough due to a cold, as asthma attacks can sometimes be triggered by the smell of Vick's.

Honey and Black Pepper:

You can make a cough syrup using honey and black pepper. Mix 1 tsp ground black pepper into 3 tsps of honey. You can take it like that (it's very hot and sweet) or add hot water and sip it. This is one of many cough remedies used by Native Americans. I would not recommend this treatment for asthma, as the pepper can get stuck in your throat and trigger an asthma attack.

Alternatively, Cayenne pepper can be used instead of black pepper, but I would recommend a smaller portion of it (perhaps ~1/4 to 1/2 tsp). Cayenne pepper is also one of many home remedies for high blood pressure, home remedies for arthritis, and home remedies for migraines.

Home Remedies for a Cough - Chestal Cough Syrup
Chestal Cough Syrup

Homeopathic Cough Syrup:

While not necessarily a "home remedy", there is a homeopathic cough syrup that I have used many times and highly recommend. It's made from honey and even tastes like honey but has a lower viscosity. The cough syrup is called Chestal, and is made by Boiron. It is one of my favorite homeopathic remedies and is also available in a children's formula.

Sage and Thyme:

Both Sage and Thyme are helpful herbs when it comes to breathing problems. Make a tea with 1 tsp of either ingredient (or mix them together). Pour boiling water over them and it steep for 5 minutes. Add honey to sweeten. Honey is one of many sore throat remedies, and is one of the home remedies for allergies as well so it's a good choice to add to an herbal tea. These are herbs that help dilate your bronchial tubes and can ease an asthma attack or coughing fit and help break up a chest cold.

Coltsfoot:

Home Remedies for a Cough - Dried Coltsfoot
Dried Coltsfoot
I was excited to find coltsfoot available at Amazon.com as I haven't been able to find it locally for years, and it is highly effective in treating asthma. Coltsfoot even has a reputation for treating whooping cough. If you have whooping cough symptoms, go see a medical practitioner rather than trying to treat it at home. Whooping cough is highly contagious. For an asthma attack, or chest cold, I would usually make a tea of 1 tsp thyme and 1 tsp of coltsfoot and let it steep in boiling water for about 5 minutes. I usually added honey and drank it hot. It would loosen up my chest during an asthma attack pretty quickly.

Plantain Leaf:

I'm not talking about the little bananas, rather a green herb that I used to be able to find in health food stores. This is another herb that I would mix with either coltsfoot or thyme when having asthma trouble. The instructions are the same 1 tsp of each herb, steep in boiling water for 5 minutes, and add honey to taste.

Black Tea:

Hot black tea (sweetened or not) but without milk is a great emergency substitute for asthma medication. Tea contains Theophylin, which is actually a chemical that has been synthesized into a prescription asthma drug. It is wonderful because most restaurants carry it and it's an easy substitute for an inhaler if you're stuck without one. I don't recommend using it instead of Dr recommended medication, but if you're in a pinch, it can get you through a bad situation.

If tea is not available, then opt for hot black coffee. While coffee does not have as much Theophylin as black tea, it does have some and can still be beneficial.

Peppermint:

Peppermint tea can be beneficial for treating coughs related to colds or the flu, but I would not recommend it for asthma. If there are no other options and someone is having an asthma attack, I would recommend trying a smell test before giving it to the person. Have the patient smell the tea bag (or the brewed tea) before they drink it. Keep in mind that doing so may exacerbate symptoms depending on their sensitivities. Some asthmatics are triggered by things that have minty smells. If the smell doesn't make it worse, then the peppermint tea could be beneficial. Peppermint can be a good home remedy for heartburn, and also one of the home remedies for bloating so if the coughing is triggered by heartburn, it could help in that way as well.

Astragalus Root:

Home Remedies for a Cough - Astragalus root
Astragalus Root Liquid Capsules
Another herb that's great for the lungs is astragalus root. Astragalus root not only helps heal the lungs from a number of conditions, but is also one of the home remedies for flu and is one of the great preventive home remedies for sinus infections. That makes it a great herb to have on hand for flu and cold season, and to fight any virus that moves into your chest. I take it in liquid capsule form, but there are a variety of ways to take it.

Thorn Apple (Also known as Jimsonweed):

I left Thorn Apple til last because it is a toxic herb used in Chinese medicine to treat asthma and coughs. While this herb is also a potential home remedy for hair loss, I'd recommend getting the help of a medical practitioner before using it.

If someone  has ingested a plant that you are afraid is poisonous, please contact your local or national poison control center immediately. The website: http://indoorplanttips.com/poisonous-plants/ lists phone numbers for the United States national poison control center, as well as the ASPCA poison control center for animal poisonings.

How to Stop Coughing:

Whatever the reason for your cough, be sure to stay hydrated, because that will thin the mucus and help you clear your airways.

Asthmatic Cough:

Over the years as an asthmatic, I've run into many suggestions for how to stop coughing. One that actually helps a bit is to raise your arms over your head, as it expands your chest and opens up your airways a little. However, if you're in the midst of an asthma attack, it's just not practical to hold your arms in the air for long. I usually advise people to sit up straight with their feet on the floor, arch the back, and pull tight clothes away from the throat and chest. Breathe as slowly and as deeply as you can, in through your nose and out through your mouth; breathing into your stomach (called diaphragmatic breathing). Respiratory therapists usually describe this method of breathing as "smelling the roses and blowing out the candles". Just make sure the "blowing out the candles" part of the breath is slow.

I have seen a hot shower listed as a "no fail way to stop coughing"; however, be cautious if the cough is caused by asthma, as a hot shower can actually aggravate the symptoms. Even WebMD recommends a hot shower, but obviously the people who say that have never had an asthma attack because just the thought of a shower during an asthma attack is almost suffocating. An asthma cough is better relieved by a hot drink than by increasing humidity.

Dry cough Due to Illness:

If you have a dry cough due to an illness, then humidity will probably help. In that case, take a hot shower or use a humidifier. Hot drinks should also help loosen things up and stop a coughing fit.

Home Remedies for High Blood Pressure

HYPERTENSION is also known as high blood pressure, a chronic medical condition where the blood pressure (BP) in the arteries is high; requiring the heart to function harder than it should to keep blood circulating. There are two measurements for blood pressure, systolic (top reading), when the heart muscle is contracting, and diastolic (bottom reading), when it is relaxed between beats. The American Heart Association blood pressure chart lists a normal blood pressure reading as follows: Systolic less than 120/Diastolic less than 80.

Doctors normally do not get concerned over low blood pressure unless there are signs and symptoms, such as:
  • Dizziness or lightheadedness
  • Fainting
  • Dehydration and unusual thirst
  • Lack of concentration
  • Blurred vision
  • Nausea
  • Cold, clammy, pale skin
  • Rapid short breaths
  • Fatigue
  • Depression
High blood pressure symptoms for most people are non-existent unless their blood pressure is extremely high, and then there may be a severe headache, fatigue and/or confusion. Hypertension is often called ‘the silent killer.’

How to lower blood pressure

Home Remedied for High Blood Pressure - Avocados
Avacados
Although there are numerous medications prescribed for this health problem there are also home remedies that may help you to combat high blood pressure (HBP), among them eating healthy foods. Limit your salt intake or try no salt or use other spices; foods in excess of 250mg of salt/per serving are considered ‘high salt foods.  Eat lots of healthy foods including fruits and vegetables; limit your alcohol and caffeine intake. Regular physical exercise can help you maintain a healthy weight. If you smoke, the carbon monoxide replaces some of the oxygen in your blood forcing your BP higher—therefore making your heart increase its effort to maintain a supply of needed oxygen. Avoid nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) like ibuprofen and Aleve (naproxen sodium). Such medications are self-defeating since you may retain sodium, putting your kidneys under strain and possibly raising your BP.

Home Remedies for High Blood Pressure:

There are various home remedies for high bloodpressure, including: a diet rich in fruit and vegetables combined with physical exercise

  • Drink water: Using the number of pounds you weigh as a guide, divide it by half – that is the number of ounces of water you should drink daily to help keep your system flushed and your blood pressure lower
  • Avocados – Eat them regularly. There are 2 essential fatty acids in avocados that help to maintain normal blood pressure
  • Home Remedies for High Blood Pressure - Apple Cider Vinegar
    Apple Cider Vinegar
Apple cider vinegar (ACV) – take 2 teaspoons of raw, organic, unpasteurized, unfiltered ACV in water or juice to help prevent hypertension.  ACV is also a home remedy for hair loss, a home remedy for heartburn, one of many home remedies for arthritis, and a yeast infection home remedy
  • Astragalus Root  Easiest to buy a bottle of pills at the health food store. Follow instructions on the label. Astragalus Root is also one of the home remedies for flu.
  • Garlic – Eat raw cloves added to food or take capsules. Garlic is also an effective sore throat home remedy.
  • Celery – juiced or eat seeds - it naturally helps to lower blood pressure
  • Cinnamon – use of cinnamon can greatly reduce blood pressure
  • Cayenne – may be one of the quickest ways to keep blood pressure readings down. Stir one teaspoon of cayenne into 1/2 cup of lukewarm water and drink. Be cautious, as it is very spicy-hot. Cayenne is also one of the home remedies for back pain and can also be used as one of the home remedies for sinus infections.
  • Chamomile – Has calming properties and can help relieve stress, it is also a home remedy for migraines and a home remedy for bloating one of many home remedies for eczema. If you are allergic to ragweed, be cautious of chamomile
  •  Fennel – Lowers blood pressure and is home remedy for heartburn, home remedy for bloating, and listed among home remedies for a cough,
  •  Hawthorn berries – lower blood pressure, protect heart and circulatory system, and a home remedy for insomnia
  • Parsley – According to Natural News:
"Parsley is also known as a powerful diuretic that reduces blood pressure and enhances kidney function. In particular, parsley increases sodium and water excretion through urine and increases potassium reabsorption into the kidneys."
Parsley is also one of the home remedies for allergies
  • Magnesium - will lower blood pressure readings. Take supplements as recommended by your doctor or the manufacturer.
  • Vitamin C – is critical to reducing blood pressure
  • Szechuan Buttons (AKA Toothache Plant) - This plant contains vasodilators that help lower blood pressure. It is also a great home remedy for toothache...I bet you'd never have guessed that! This video shows a person's reaction to tasting it:

WebMD offers an extended list of common natural remedies (and reviews) often used to treat the symptoms of high blood pressure; I have found potassium and magnesium to be effective.

Read Labels and Avoid:

  • salt (salt raises your blood pressure)
  • monosodium glutamate (MSG)
  • baking soda
  • most canned vegetables
  • commercially prepared meals/foods
  • diet soft drinks
  • mold inhibitors
  • meat tenderizers
  • most sugar substitutes (Xylitol is said to be a safe substitute and helps to build the immune system)
  • soft water
  • sauces such as soy sauce
  • Rosemary

Buy a Blood Pressure Monitor:

The best way to know what your blood pressure is, and whether your efforts to lower it are effective is to use a blood pressure monitor to track it.  Blood pressure readings are often taken in both arms if the patient is at risk of cardiovascular disease. It is a good idea to log your daily blood pressure readings and take them with you to your doctor.

Home Remedies for Flu

Symptoms of the Flu

According to http://www.flu.gov, all types of flu have the same basic symptoms, but some people get worse flu symptoms than others. The general signs to watch for are fatigue, weakness, headache or body aches, chills and / or fever, and a cough that may be accompanied by a sore throat. I've always had a hard time differentiating between common cold symptoms and the flu, but I now understand that the fatigue and weakness are more pronounced with the flu, whereas a runny or stuffy nose is more likely with a  cold.

Types of Flu

Some common types of Influenza are the H1N1 virus (aka Swine Flu) and H7N9 virus (aka Avian or Bird Flu) both of which fall under the Influenza A umbrella, and Influenza B includes the Seasonal Flu. Both Influenza A and Influenza B are included in the vaccine of the annual flu shot. The Swine Flu created quite an uproar a few years ago when officials predicted a pandemic, and while technically it was a pandemic and people did die from it, the effects were not as frightening as was portrayed by the media. Nevertheless Influenza should not be taken lightly, as it decimated the population of the world in 1918 during World War I. That strain was called The Spanish Flu.

The Stomach Flu

While symptoms of flu can include vomiting and diarrhea (mostly in children), the ubiquitous "stomach flu symptoms" are usually either caused by food poisoning or the norovirus, which is not related to influenza at all. Food poisoning symptoms can include gastrointestinal cramps, nausea, diarrhea, body aches, fever and chills, but can be identical to those of the norovirus since the norovirus can be transmitted through food. For more information on the norovirus, please visit http://www.cdc.gov/norovirus.

Flu Remedies

There are a number of home remedies for the flu, and homeopathic remedies for it as well. All of the remedies listed here are for general flu symptoms, but if you have specific symptoms that are bothersome, please look at the list of other conditions at the bottom of this page. Also, be sure to stay hydrated as dehydration is a potential complication of the flu.

Baking Soda:

Home Remedies for Flu - Baking Soda
Bob's Aluminum-Free Baking Soda

One remedy that is credited with saving lives in the Spanish Flu pandemic of 1918 is baking soda. If you plan to use this remedy, please only do so if you have normal to low blood pressure, as there is a risk that the sodium in baking soda might raise your blood pressure. The other important precautions are to take it at least an hour before lying down, and on an empty stomach. To use this remedy, mix 1/2 tsp of baking soda in a glass of water 6 times for the first day, 4 times the second day, and twice the third day. After that, continue taking it once every day. The premise of this remedy is that it makes your system alkaline and the flu virus cannot thrive in an alkaline system.

If your blood pressure is high, you can substitute fresh lemon juice for the baking soda. Do not add sweetener.

Elderberries:

Home Remedies for Flu - Sambucol
Sambucol for Flu
Elderberries have the reputation of being great at treating the flu. There is a homeopathic treatment called Sambucol that comes in pill form and you can buy at the health food store.

If you're not keen on taking Sambucol, then elderberry tea is another viable option for treating the flu. There are ingredients in the tea that reduce inflammation to help with body aches, and others that boost the immune system. To make a tea either use a packaged variety or pour boiling water over the berries or leaves and let them steep about 5 minutes. I would recommend sweetening the tea with either honey or Xylitol (a natural sugar-alcohol that boosts the immune system).

Astragalus Root:

Home Remedies for Flu - Astragalus Root
Astragalus Root
Astragalus Root tends to be something of a wonder-herb. It has so many benefits to your body and immune system. When you have the flu, not only will it help your body fight the virus, but it can also help you regain strength after your body has eliminated the virus from your system. Astragalus root is also a home remedy for coughs, sinus infections, and helps to lower blood pressure. It comes in liquid pill form which I prefer, powdered capsules, tablets, and dried in bulk.

Hydrogen peroxide

This was one remedy that I thought was very odd when I first heard of it, but after you think about it for a little while it makes sense. The premise is that most people have antibodies in their eyes, nose and mouth that can fight the flu virus and help prevent them from getting sick; but there is no protection in the ears. There is a theory that most people get the flu by touching a contaminated surface and then later sticking their fingers in their ears; therefore, if you swab your ears with hydrogen peroxide 2 - 3 times daily, you can kill the virus before it takes root in your body.

Oscillococcinum

Home Remedies for Flu - Oscillococcinum
Oscillococcinum
I have used Oscillococcinum many times for flu and upper respiratory infections. I once heard it referred to as "homeopathic antibiotics". I have personally found it to be very effective if taken when you first start to get sick. The box comes with tiny vials filled with teeny sugary sweet pills. To take the medicine you simply empty the contents of a vial in your mouth as directed on the package. It's kind of expensive, but it is effective too.

Chicken soup

I'm sure you've heard that chicken soup is a good remedy for colds and flu, but did you know that there is actually scientific data to back that up? Chicken soup can help move mucous out of your body and help boost your immune system. It is especially useful if you add garlic and cayenne to it to boost the immune-boosting properties.
